Using art and materials with a fantastic back story, the Women's Collective in Janakpur produces unique and collectable hand-crafted items. Birds=peace, elephants=good luck, turtles=good relationship and fish=safe travel.
In this unique example of hand-made village art the Women's Collective makes decorative mirrors - some round, some rectangular - encased in a border of hand-painted, hand-made papier mache which is made from hand-made Daphne paper (the Daphne or lotka plant regenerates after the bark is collected for paper-making in the villages).
The Janakpur Women's Collective ("A little step for women empowerment") supports and trains women and the disabled in creating the distinctive art works for sale. This work, including the paper making, sustains many people otherwise living in poverty.
A photo of Mrs Rekha Chaudhary, one of the artists/teachers at the Collective, is included here.
