7 original Mithila paintings are offered here. They are acrylic on canvas; naïve, bright, evocative and unique. Painted by the Women's Collective in Janakpur, they are sold unframed. Please tell us you love them as much as we do.
Mithila Art is a superb form of colourful naïve folk art. Long story short; the Hindu god Ram & the Nepali princess Sita decided to marry. The wedding took place in Janakpur, Nepal. When? Ages ago. Janakpur had always had a naïve form of folk art that wasn't particularly colourful; however, in honour of the wedding the excited citizens literally painted the town ….not just red, but every colour of the rainbow. All the houses and everything that didn't move was painted with the story of Ram & Sita's wedding, and the lives of the people of Janakpur.
This art form persists through Nepal Mithila Women's Handicraft with the goal "A little step for women empowerment." The art form is taught to women and the disabled, and tells the stories of the famous wedding and also the everyday lives of the people of Janakpur. Which are, incidentally, fascinating. How gorgeous are these paintings? They are, of course, symbolic as follows: Birds=peace; elephants=good luck; turrtles=good relationship and fish=travel safely. Which will you choose?
